About Us

Mission

The overarching mission for St Luke’s CARES’ work is to have a positive impact on the local community by helping individuals to identify and overcome barriers which prevent them from achieving their full potential. We will do this by providing support, advice and practical activities whilst building relationships and trust, and through effective multi-partnership working.

History

In 1994, St Luke’s Church, Holbeck appointed a former youth worker as curate.  His remit included developing the church’s work with young people in and around the Beeston and Holbeck areas of Leeds, beginning with the existing church youth.  This led to the creation of an informal, detached programme with the young people who hung around outside the church.

Over time, the young people responded positively and their complaints of boredom, lack of activities and poor facilities were addressed by encouraging them to develop their own interests.  This resulted in the formation of a football team that became successful in local tournaments.

As a result of these efforts, mutual trust was established and confidence built up to a point where a growing interest in other activities began to develop.  Gradually, as relationship grew stronger between workers and the youth, an increased willingness to talk more about their live, problems and concerns, and to seek help and support, became more apparent.

Recognising the growing interest in this pioneering work, and the fact that it needed greater resources, led to a rethink of how church should address the needs of young people in the area.  In recognition of its huge potential, it was clear that a major undertaking was needed. The result was the formation of the St Luke’s Youth Project in 1998.

Over the years the Youth Project instigated a range of activities designed at giving young people in the area somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to.

In 2003 the Youth Project joined with the Hitbase IT suite and the Street Flash Dance to form St Luke’s Community and Regeneration Enterprises Limited (CARES).

St Luke’s CARES now plays an active part in the daily life of South Leeds and is a well respected provider of services that benefit the local community.
