HITBase

HITBase [which stands for Holbeck Information and Technology Base] is a UK Online Centre which has been helping people in Beeston, Holbeck, and other parts of Leeds, improve their computing skills since it first opened in 2000.

Originally set up as part of St Luke’s Church, HITBase is now under the wing of St Luke’s CARES, but still operates from inside the church building where there is a small suite containing eight computers.

Set up to cater for adult education in the area [ Age 16+ ] HITBase prides itself on being able to offer people a relaxed and friendly atmosphere in which to work.

HITBase is an accredited centre for ECDL [European Computer Driving Licence]. HITBase does not run ECDL as a structured course. In other words a tutor will not be standing up in front of a class and delivering a lesson. Instead, study materials are provided for you to use, and you work through everything at your own pace. A tutor will always be on hand, though, to offer help if needed. As far as cost is concerned, there is a charge of £30 to register to do the entire course.

HITBase is not just here for people to study towards qualifications. People can just call in and use the Internet, write a letter, send an email if they have a web-mail account, update a CV, apply for work online, or keep up to date with friends and family on Facebook.

Age UK classes also take place at HITBase. For details on the courses they run, and to put your name down to attend classes, you can contact Age UK on 0113 2458579.

I should point out that we do have a booking in system where students can book a time-slot on a computer. This is to guarantee that there will be a computer here for them when they arrive. Once you’ve registered with us, places can be booked by just calling 0113 2710766, or by putting your name down before you leave a session with us.

HITBase currently opens on a Tuesday between 9:30am and 12:00pm and on a Wednesday between 9:30am and 3:00pm.

NEWS

GET ONLINE WEEK 2011

As part of Get Online week, HITBase held an open day in which people were able to come in and introduce themselves to computers. The event was held on Friday 4th November 2011 between 12:00pm and 3:00pm and was designed mainly for people with limited or no computer skills, but more experienced users were able to attend as well. We will be looking to hold similar events during the next few months, so watch this space.

GO ON - LEEDS EVENT

On Monday 26th September 2011, HITBase - like a number of other centres in Leeds - took part in the Go-On Leeds Event with the help of UK Online. This was an opportunity for Adults in the community to either introduce themselves to a computer or build upon their basic skills with the help of UK Online's Go On Website. The event was filmed and a video of what went on in Leeds on that day can be seen here.
